The Motor City Machine Guns will be free agents in July after their WWE contracts officially expire, with Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin being released on Friday, April 24 in the aftermath of WrestleMania 42 as part of roster cuts that saw 25 wrestlers be let go by the company.
There has already been plenty of discussion about MCMG's future in pro wrestling, and Fightful Select has reported that TNA sources have claimed there is always a home for the tag team in the promotion but they expect Shelley and Sabin to eventually end up in All Elite Wrestling. It is unknown if AEW have made contact with the Motor City Machine Guns since they were released.
AEW did hold talks with the Motor City Machine Guns after they departed TNA in March 2024 and the promotion actually had plans for MCMG vs. The Young Bucks for the AEW World Tag Team Titles at All In 2024. Talks went radio silent in the summer of 2024, however, and Shelley and Sabin ended up debuting for WWE in October 2024. Fightful has noted that AEW made an offer to MCMG and WWE matched that offer.
During their 18-month run in WWE, the Motor City Machine Guns had a 42-day reign with the WWE Tag Team Titles, but they were primarily booked as simply a team in the SmackDown tag team division.
Fightful noted that people within WWE stated Shelley and Sabin seemed like they hoped they would wrestle more in WWE, but they were happy with being used by the company. It also seemed like the team knew they would continue to do well and remain busy outside of WWE.
Chris Sabin confirmed MCMG's WWE release on Monday, within which he promoted his and Shelley's band GRPPLING and their upcoming EP.
