Tony Khan Interested In Running G1 Climax-Esque Tournament In AEW

Could AEW do their own G1 Climax?

All Elite Wrestling might hold their own version of New Japan Pro-Wrestling's G1 Climax tournament in the future.

Speaking on the Pacific Rim podcast, AEW CEO Tony Khan revealed he was interested in holding a round-robin tournament in the promotion.

"There are single elimination tournaments in AEW. We've never done a round-robin tournament. It's something I am interested in, but certainly, the G1 is an industry leader there when it comes to being the preeminent round-robin tournament in pro wrestling. We participate in the G1. We've sent people in the past. With Eddie Kingston being part of G1 and Wheeler Yuta competing in Super Juniors, it gives us great opportunities to have top stars from AEW that we believe in, represent AEW in Japan," Khan said.

After a number of other round-robin tournaments, NJPW began holding the G1 Climax in 1991. Past winners include Kenny Omega, Kazuchika Okada, Keiji Muto, Masahiro Chono, Satoshi Kojima, and Tetsuya Naito.

G1 Climax 33 is set to get underway next month and will run from July 15 until August 13.

AEW's current single-elimination tournaments include the Owen Hart Foundation tournaments and the AEW World Title Eliminator tournament that is held during the build to November's Full Gear pay-per-view.
