Tony Schiavone has revealed why he missed a recent episode fo AEW Dynamite, with the veteran announcer said to have been ‘on assignment’ during the show on January 8.
Some had speculated that Schiavone had been pulled from broadcast after his disparaging remarks against NJPW’s Chris Charlton on social media, but this was not the case. As Schiavone himself noted on What Happened When, his wife had undergone a medical procedure and he was taking care of her:
“Couldn’t have been it, no. No, as a matter of fact, she got out of the hospital on Wednesday, and so I just let her walk home from the hospital instead of picking her up, and I went to TV and got suspended. But she made it home about six hours later,” said Schiavone in a sarcastic tone before adding his wife Lois is doing well whilst having a joke with host Conrad Thompson over speculation about his absence.
Schiavone’s comments about Charlton came in the wake of the NJPW English language announcer disparaging AEW and owner Tony Khan during the Kenny Omega vs. Gabe Kidd singles match at NJPW Wrestle Dynasty on January 5. Whilst Charlton seemed to be making the comments as part of the storyline between Omega and Kidd, NJPW felt he overstepped the mark in criticising a business partner, with Charlton suspended for two months as a result of his comments.
