Drew McIntyre and CM Punk's feud truly kicked off on the January 29 episode of Monday Night Raw. Following CM Punk's confirmation that he would be sidelined for several months with a torn triceps, a move that occurred at the Royal Rumble following a Futureshock DDT from Drew McIntyre, 'Irn Dru' appeared to rub salt in the wound, telling Punk that he prayed for this and it happened. A brawl then took place, with McIntyre laying out Punk, and they haven't stopped feuding since.

Speaking with Sam Roberts before SummerSlam, McIntyre revealed the original version of the promo was going to be more brutal but WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H scaled it back to avoid offending people.

"I actually went a step further, and between Triple H and I, we got it where we felt like we wouldn't offend a lot of people. I had it a little further than that, and Triple H dialled me back slightly, and we landed there," McIntyre said, laughing.

CM Punk made his in-ring return at SummerSlam against Drew McIntyre and the Scotsman won their first encounter following shenanigans involving special guest referee Seth Rollins. The programme is planned to continue, though, and major plans for an upcoming clash between Punk and McIntyre have been revealed.
