Update On Possible Joe Hendry Vs. John Cena Match
Will Joe Hendry vs. John Cena actually happen?
Feb 4, 2025
Joe Hendry has long talked about wanting to wrestle John Cena and Hendry's rhetoric has ramped up since he won the TNA World Championship at January's Genesis pay-per-view.
Hendry made his WWE main roster debut in the Men's Royal Rumble, entering the match at number 15. Hendry's time in the match was short, however, and he was promptly eliminated by Roman Reigns following a spear from the former Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
Hendry's quick elimination meant he didn't get to interact on-screen with John Cena but the two men did speak backstage, with Hendry revealing that Cena very much challenged him to generate enough interest in a possible Hendry vs. Cena encounter for the match to happen.
"The same way that I believed that I would be in the Rumble, I hand on heart believe that I will wrestle John Cena this year. 100%. There’s not any doubt. I had the opportunity to tell John Cena that [backstage]. We had a long conversation. It was awesome. He's the greatest. I'll share some of it, I won't share it all, but basically, what he did say was that fortune favours the bold. What he made clear is that, if I want the match to happen, it's on my shoulders. I gotta make it happen. I gotta generate the interest to make it happen, and it was almost like a challenge," Hendry said on the Ariel Helwani Show.
"Aside from that, he gave me some great advice. With all the chaos of the Rumble going on, John Cena sat down with me, and we had a long, meaningful conversation. He could have used that time to think about what he was doing. He instead invested the time to talk to me. So I think he sees something in me. But I have to prove myself. I have to put myself in a position where me versus John Cena is one of the most compelling matchups in professional wrestling. I feel like I can."
John Cena is currently on his retirement tour and his in-ring career will soon be over at the end of 2025.
Following his Royal Rumble appearance, Joe Hendry was endorsed by WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H.
