John Cena has confirmed plans for the WWE John Cena Classic are a "work in progress" but the 17-time world champion is invested in bringing the concept to fruition.

"Oh my God, I'm super excited. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time. And, again, we're still working things out. And I like that, I like that it’s a work in progress. But this is absolutely from me. I can't tell you how excited I am about it. I am fully invested in this. I can't wait to see what it is. I can't wait until we announce the date and location. That's obviously step one, and we'll go from there," Cena told Adam's Apple.

Cena announced the John Cena Classic during an appearance at the Backlash pay-per-view. The event will feature main roster wrestlers against NXT talents, similar to the December 13, 2025 episode of Saturday Night's Main Event that featured Cena's retirement match. There will also be a John Cena Classic Championship, although the champion will be determined by fan vote as opposed to in a professional wrestling match.

WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select has reported that no date or venue for the John Cena Classic appears to have been nailed down, but one source noted the event taking place in December appeared to make logistical sense for WWE's calendar and it being around the one-year anniversary of John Cena's retirement.

How the John Cena Classic will air has also not been finalised, but Netflix immediately expressed interest in the show being broadcast on the streaming platform.
