The ongoing saga of Ricky Starks’ residence in AEW purgatory recently took a twist, with reports suggesting Starks asked for his AEW release but was turned down by management.

Starks has not featured at all for AEW since March 2024, with it assumed by many that he will head to WWE when his deal is done. A recent report stated that Starks did officially request his release but Tony Khan allegedly denied his request, with Starks’ return to the indies his way of keeping his name relevant whilst shaking off any ring rust.

A follow-up from Fightful Select suggests that Starks asked for his release ‘months ago’, and as things stand he is set to remain with AEW until the Spring, when it is believed his deal will finally come to an end.

Starks has been with AEW since June 2020 and is a former AEW World Tag Team Champion, and FTW Champion in the organisation. Starks’ last televised AEW match came on the March 30 edition of AEW Collision, with Starks and tag partner Big Bill losing to Top Flight.
