The planned Universal Championship match at WWE Day 1 is reportedly 'very important' for the build to and eventual card at WrestleMania 38.

Last Friday's episode of SmackDown saw Paul Heyman discuss being fired by Roman Reigns, who is preparing to defend the Universal Title against Brock Lesnar at Day 1 on Saturday 1 January 2022. Heyman noted, in his segment, that his WWE career may now be over.

However, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Heyman features heavily in the plans for the Universal Title match between his two former charges this coming weekend.

With both Reigns and Lesnar being kept off Live Events and shows ahead of Day 1 - following a COVID-19 outbreak in WWE - Meltzer also notes that it's vitally important the Universal Championship Match at Day 1 plays out as planned, with all parties being able to take part, for the sake of WWE's build to WrestleMania 38 in April.

Meltzer said: "Obviously, he’s gonna have something to do with the storyline on Saturday because I was essentially told that it was very very important for WrestleMania that Roman Reigns does not miss this show, that Lesnar does not miss this show, and that Heyman does not miss this show.

"His name was mentioned to me in that context so obviously, there’s something big going on there."
