WWE NXT Results - April 20, 2021: Kyle O'Reilly Returns, Sarray Debuts

Also an NXT Cruiserweight Title match and more drama within The Way

This week's edition of NXT may not have been the most high profile show in the black and gold brand's history, but the episode featured quality in-ring action and advanced multiple storylines.

A celebratory Kyle O'Reilly opened the broadcast dressed like he was on his holidays. The former Undisputed ERA man admitted he was so happy because he was far away from Adam Cole. He then turned his attention to the future and made it known that he is going after the NXT Championship now that he has found his killer instinct.

O'Reilly couldn't continue the promo, though, as Cameron Grimes suddenly headed to the ring. The new Million Dollar Man congratulated O'Reilly on his win at Stand & Deliver and proposed a number of business ventures to the former NXT Tag Team Champion.

O'Reilly initially feigned interest, but he put an end to Grimes' dreams after he told him they would go one on one later in the show.

A clip of Sarray arriving at the Capitol Wrestling Center was shown next and Zoey Stark interrupted The Warrior Of The Sun's meeting with William Regal to say she wanted to be her first opponent. Sarray accepted and Regal sanctioned the match for later in the show.

Before that match, though, we had Dexter Lumis vs. LA Knight. Both men had time on top, but the action broke down after Dexter Lumis spotted Indi Hartwell amongst the audience. The two lovers? locked eyes and LA Knight was able to take advantage and deck Lumis with a Draping Neckbreaker for the 1-2-3.

Lumis wasn't too concerned about the loss following the match after Indi jumped the barricade. She and The Tortured Artist were about to kiss but The Way suddenly grabbed Hartwell and carried her backstage.

A backstage promo from Leon Ruff followed. The former NXT North American Champion noted Isaiah "Swerve" Scott had pushed him too far. Now, he's just waiting for Swerve to make the next move.

Next up was an Io Shirai sit-down interview with Beth Phoenix. Shirai said she will face Raquel Gonzalez again when the time is right. For now, though, The Genius Of The Sky is going to take some time away to rest. Franky Monet then suddenly jumped into the interview and said she would be willing to fill Shirai's shoes in the NXT women's division while she is gone. This led to a tirade from The Genius Of The Sky which came to an end after Shirai said she prefers cats.

The broadcast then returned to the squared circle for the next match and Breezango were stood in the ring dressed as Queen's Guards while Rule Brittania played. All this did was anger the Grizzled Young Veterans, though. Breezango used that anger to their advantage initially, but GYV managed to fight back and they picked up the win with Ticket To Mayhem after five minutes.

McKenzie Mitchell was about to interview Indi Hartwell backstage after the match, but The Way suddenly arrived like an effective PR team and ended the chat before it even began. Bronson Reed then appeared and made it clear that he's still after the NXT North American Title. Gargano initially blew off Reed but Austin Theory suddenly puffed out his chest like a prized peacock and revealed he had spoken to William Regal. It turns out the NXT general manager said the only way Bronson can earn a title shot is if he defeats Theory. They will go one on one next week.

Sarray's WWE debut was next on the show. She and Zoey Stark had a hard-hitting, impressive match and Sarray picked up the win after seven minutes with a Saito Suplex. The storyline between Stark and Toni Storm then continued after the match as Storm bull-rushed Stark while she was heading up the ramp.

An interview with Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai followed the match. Kai said Mercedes Martinez doesn't deserve a title shot, but Gonzalez seemed more open and proclaimed she would take down everyone in the NXT women's division until no one is left standing.

The drama within The Way was then the focus of the broadcast once again. Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell were talking until Indi suddenly spotted Dexter Lumis through a window and went to him. LeRae continued walking and talking none the wiser about her tag team partner's disappearance until she bumped into Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart. The Poison Pixie declared she was still after the NXT Women's Tag Team Title, but as she had no back-up, the champions took advantage and beat her down in their locker room.

Another excellent match was next on the show as Kushida defended the NXT Cruiserweight Championship in an open challenge against Oney Lorcan. The contest featured quality mat wrestling and hard-hitting strikes and Kushida picked up the submission win after locking in the Hoverboard Lock.

The Time Splitter had little time to celebrate, though, as Legado del Fantasma suddenly attacked him, but MSK charged to the ring to even the odds and the babyfaces stood tall to end the segment.

A promo from Mercedes Martinez followed and she promised to take out Dakota Kai so nothing could stand in the way of her title opportunity.

The broadcast then caught up with Candice LeRae after her beatdown. Johnny Wrestling and Austin Theory both showed concern for The Poison Pixie, but they were distracted after Indi Hartwell turned up and revealed she had also spoken to William Regal and he had awarded them an NXT Women's Tag Team Title match. LeRae didn't seem particularly impressed amidst all the drama, though.

Kevin Owens' favourite tag team Ever-Rise were in action next and they were dismantled by Imperium within two minutes. The focus of the match was instead on the rivalry between Killian Dain & Drake Maverick and Imperium as The Beast Of Belfast marched to the ring to talk to Alexander Wolfe. This distracted Fabian Aichner, who was almost rolled up by Ever-Rise for the win, and Drake Maverick charged to the ring and punched Wolfe while this was going on. Dain then picked up his cruiserweight friend and carried him to the back and Imperium put Ever-Rise away moments later.

It was then time for the main event and Kyle O'Reilly and Karrion Kross had a brief staredown as the former Undisputed ERA man headed to the entrance ramp. Cameron Grimes vs. Kyle O'Reilly then got underway and the quality in-ring action on NXT continued. Both men enjoyed spells on top and O'Reilly managed to secure the victory after he blocked Cave In and fought back with a Clothesline, a Brainbuster and a Flying Knee Drop.

This week's show then went off the air as O'Reilly celebrated.
