A scrapped WWE pay-per-view could be set to return as part of NXT.

WWE filed to trademark 'NXT Battleground' with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 20. The trademark was filed to be used for professional wrestling shows.

The full filing was as follows:

"IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Entertainment services, namely, a show about professional wrestling; entertainment services, namely, the production and exhibition of professional wrestling events rendered through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing wrestling news and information through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information."

Battleground was initially added to the WWE calendar in October 2013, replacing Over The Limit, before it was moved to July. The pay-per-view was scrapped in 2018 after WWE discontinued running brand-exclusive pay-per-views, with the final edition of Battleground as it stands taking place in July 2017.

While the show featured several widely-panned matches like Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Title and Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton in a Punjabi Prison Match, Battleground also featured some fondly remembered bouts, including Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens and a Shield Triple Threat in 2016, and Cody Rhodes & Goldust vs. The Shield in 2013.
