WWE's WrestleMania 40 Plans For The Intercontinental Title Revealed

The search for Gunther's WWE WrestleMania 40 opponent has been narrowed down.

Plans for Gunther's WWE Intercontinental Championship defence at WrestleMania 40 were confirmed on last night's episode of Raw.

The reigning champion will defend the title against the winner of a six-man gauntlet match, set to take place on next Monday's edition of the show. The competitors are Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura, Chad Gable, Bronson Reed, JD McDonagh and Ricochet.

Gunther has held the Intercontinental Championship for a record-breaking 634 days at the time of writing. He initially won it on the June 10, 2022 edition of SmackDown, defeating previous title-holder Ricochet.

Last month, rumours circulated ahead of the February 19 episode of Raw suggesting that Gunther was about to drop the belt to Jey Uso, although this proved to be untrue - possibly even a false story spread backstage by WWE management in an attempt to expose leakers within the company. Jey was instead cost the match by his brother Jimmy, with a potential bout between the two another possibility heading into WrestleMania.

WrestleMania 40 is set to take place on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Confirmed matches for the show so far are as follows:

  • Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes - Undisputed WWE Universal Championship
  • Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Becky Lynch - Women's World Championship
  • Seth Rollins (c) vs. Drew McIntyre - World Heavyweight Championship
  • IYO SKY (c) vs. Bayley - WWE Women's Championship
