WWE SmackDown After WrestleMania 39 Results

Full results from WWE SmackDown after WrestleMania 39

Following what was voted as one of the worst episodes of Raw in history on Monday, April 3, WWE held the post-WrestleMania 39 edition of SmackDown in Portland, Oregon on Friday, April 7.

The show was more akin to what fans had begun to expect from SmackDown and the show opened with a big clash between the Brawling Brutes and Imperium, while issues within The Bloodline were teased throughout before a main event clash between Jey Uso and Sami Zayn.

Check out everything that happened on the SmackDown after WrestleMania 39 below:

Brawling Brutes def. Imperium

Following a video package to recap WrestleMania 39, SmackDown wasted no time in getting to the in-ring action as The Brawling Brutes of Sheamus, Butch, and Ridge Holland faced Imperium’s GUNTHER, Ludwig Kaiser, and Giovanni Vinci in the opening contest.

The Brawling Brutes enjoyed the better of the opening moments but Sheamus and GUNTHER eventually started screaming at each other which distracted the referee and allowed Vinci and Kaiser to hit a double team move on Butch to dominate the action heading into the first commercial break of the night.

GUNTHER worked over Butch when SmackDown returned and immediately took a cheap shot at Sheamus, knocking him from the apron. Butch made the hot tag to Ridge Holland moments later but Imperium soon wore down the former Rugby League player with a triple team move.

GUNTHER then almost won the match with a Powerbomb to Holland. Butch broke up the pin but GUNTHER fired back by locking in the Boston Crab. Holland managed to crawl over to Sheamus to make the hot tag and Sheamus ran wild on the Intercontinental Champion, connecting with 10 Beats of the Bodhran.

Sheamus then went for the Brogue Kick but missed, only to connect with White Noise instead for a near fall. After plenty of chaos, Sheamus caught Giovanni Vinci with a knee in mid-air before the Brogue Kick to score the victory for the Brawling Brutes.

Following a long recap of Brock Lesnar's heel turn on Monday Night Raw, Kayla Braxton asked Paul Heyman why the multi-time world champion would attack Cody Rhodes. Heyman dodged the question and hailed the accomplishments of The Bloodline at WrestleMania. Jey Uso then appeared and asked Heyman and Solo Sikoa where Jimmy Uso was. Heyman revealed that Roman Reigns told Jimmy to stay at home because The Tribal Chief wants Jey to defeat Sami Zayn in singles action all on his own. After Jey walked away, though, Heyman told Solo Sikoa to solve their problem if Jey fails to defeat Zayn.

Ricochet def. Ivar

Two talents utilised in the tag team division in recent months were in singles action in the second match on SmackDown as Ricochet faced Ivar, with Braun Strowman and Erik banned from ringside. Valhalla, however, was at ringside.

After some early domination from Ivar, Ricochet connected with a Frankensteiner and followed up with a Shooting Star Press for the win.

After the broadcast headed backstage, Kevin Owens was caught staring at his SmackDown and Raw Tag Team Title belts by Sami Zayn. After El Generico's friend admitted he had been doing the same thing, Zayn said he felt like he had to speak to Jey Uso because "something was off" about his upcoming match with Uso. Zayn even said he felt obligated to speak to Jey. Owens tried to convince Sami not to but Zayn simply stated he had to speak to his former friend.

Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan def. Natalya & Shotzi

The number one contenders for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez faced Shotzi and Natalya in a tune-up ahead of their title match with Lita and Becky Lynch on Monday's episode of Raw. Shotzi and Natalya noted they wanted to prove why they should be the number one contenders but they failed miserably as Rodriguez blocked a Hart Attack attempt before Morgan hit Oblivion on Shotzi for the win after a couple of minutes.

Xavier Woods and Madcap Moss were then shown playing WWE 2K23 backstage before LA Knight interrupted and complained about not being booked on WrestleMania 39, while Woods was featured in segments with the WWE video game on the company's biggest show of the year. Woods said he had no problem beating LA Knight again like he did a few weeks ago to set up a match for next week.

Triple H announces the 2023 WWE Draft

After another ad break, Triple H welcomed fans to SmackDown even though they had been there for a while. The WWE Chief Content Officer then touted the success of WrestleMania 39, which broke several records for the company. Triple H then said he was there to talk about the future and announced a new WWE Draft will take place "in a few weeks." The draft will also be bigger than ever, with every single WWE talent eligible to be drafted. The Game did not reveal when exactly the WWE Draft would be taking place before he introduced the new SmackDown Women's Champion Rhea Ripley.

Dominik Mysterio & Damian Priest def. Rey Mysterio & Santos Escobar

Rhea Ripley headed to the ring, flanked by her Judgment Day faction mates Finn Balor, Damian Priest, and Dominik Mysterio. Ripley demanded everyone in attendance rise for her before Finn Balor called Edge a sicko for splitting his head open with a ladder. Dominik then tried to speak, only to be booed out of the building by the fans in Portland.

Eventually, Dominik said he pulled his punches at WrestleMania before he criticised Rey Mysterio for abandoning him as a child. He then said Rey and the rest of his family could go to hell with Bad Bunny and the Latino World Order. A promo from Damian Priest about Bad Bunny then led to an interruption from the LWO ahead of the scheduled tag match of Dominik & Priest vs. Rey & Santos Escobar.

After some initial Judgment Day dominance, Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar soon got rolling and they stood tall for the first ad break of the match. When SmackDown returned, Judgment Day had regained control, working over Escobar. The former El Hijo del Fantasma eventually made the hot tag to Rey Mysterio, who looked to beat his son with a 619, only for Rhea Ripley to save Dom. Zelina Vega retaliated, taking out Ripley with a Hurricanrana before the SmackDown Women's Champion chased after her.

Back in the ring, Rey hit Dominik with the 619 but the younger Mysterio wasn't the legal man. This allowed Damian Priest to capitalise, knocking Rey out of the ring before he decked Santos Escobar with the South of Heaven for the win. Judgment Day couldn't celebrate, though, as Mysterio attacked Priest following the match, sending the heels scurrying up the ramp.

Following another break, it was revealed that Shinsuke Nakamura will return to WWE TV next week.

Sami Zayn then spoke to Jey Uso ahead of their main event match, reminding Jey there is still a way for him to get out of The Bloodline. Before Jey could respond, there was an almighty commotion and it was revealed that Kevin Owens had been attacked backstage by Solo Sikoa. The attack ultimately meant KO couldn't accompany Zayn to the ring for the main event of SmackDown.

Jey Uso def. Sami Zayn

After some early back-and-forth action in the main event, Sami Zayn looked to take out Jey Uso with a Suicide Dive but he was halted by Solo Sikoa, who made his way to the ringside area only minutes after he took out Kevin Owens backstage.

Zayn decked Uso with a Superplex when SmackDown returned from an ad break. Sami looked to follow up but Jey caught him with a Superkick in mid-air. Jey proceeded to talk trash to Zayn, only for Sami to fire back with an Exploder Suplex. The Underdog from the Underground then went for a Helluva Kick but Jey moved out of the way so Zayn hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall.

Uso managed to fight back and while the referee was distracted, Solo Sikoa pummelled Zayn with a Samoan Spike. Jey then took advantage with a Superkick before the 1-2-3.

Sikoa then beat down Sami Zayn after the match and he went for a second Samoan Spike before Jey stopped him. It was simply a ruse, though, as Jey proceeded to join the beat down of Sami after he and Solo came face-to-face.

Matt Riddle then made the save for Sami as the babyfaces stood tall to end SmackDown. Solo Sikoa, of course, attacked Riddle to write him off WWE TV back in December 2022.
