WWE SummerSlam 2023 Sets Multiple Records

Big numbers from WWE SummerSlam

As has become a common occurrence since WWE started to air their major shows on Peacock in the United States, SummerSlam set multiple records on August 5.

WWE have announced the 2023 edition of SummerSlam was the most-watched and highest-grossing in show history, with the show setting new records for viewership, gate, sponsorship, and merchandise.

WWE touted a gate of $8.5 million for SummerSlam, the largest gate for any non-WrestleMania event, according to the company. SummerSlam, meanwhile, was among the top three audiences for WWE programming since the move to Peacock in 2021. WWE also continues to incorporate sponsors into their programming, with Slim Jim, C4, and Rocket Mortgage heavily featured during SummerSlam. This helped WWE generate $7 million in sponsorship revenue for SummerSlam, up 23 percent from last year's edition of 'The Biggest Party of the Summer.'

Merchandise sales for 2023's SummerSlam were also up 60 percent from the record that was set in 2021. It was also the best merchandise sales in company history outside of WrestleMania.

SummerSlam aired from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The show has received a mixed reaction, with many criticising the main event Tribal Combat Match between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. The match was advertised to take place without interference, a stipulation that was quickly abandoned, and there has been widespread derision at Jimmy Uso turning on Jey to cost him the match.
