Established in 1997 with a certain man who made Burger King burgers look tiny in his hands as the inaugural champion, the WWE European Championship was featured across the company's programming as a title below the WWF Championship and Intercontinental Title, very much serving as a singles mid-card title.

Its position in the mid-card doesn't mean the European Championship is any less fondly remembered, however, and the belt was important during the Attitude Era, even working with the Intercontinental Title to cement some champions as Eurocontinental champions.

The belt was initially retired in 1999 because of Corporation hijinks before being brought back just a couple of months later. The European Championship was retired for good in July 2002 as WWE consolidated their title belts.
