New WWE Tag Team Championship Title Designs Unveiled On SmackDown
WWE have retired the SmackDown Tag Team Titles and introduced the WWE Tag Team Championships
On last night’s Friday Night SmackDown, the blue-strapped and silver plated SmackDown Tag Team Championships were set aside and retired, being replaced by the brand new WWE Tag Team Championships. After pulling down these titles at WrestleMania 40, Austin Theory & Grayson Waller of A-Town Down Under were handed these newly designed title belts, which were unveiled by Triple H and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis. The SmackDown Tag Team Titles debuted back in 2016 following the brand extension.
This comes after Monday Night RAW saw R-Truth and The Miz of the Awesome Truth being crowned as the new World Tag Team Champions, with newly designed title belts replacing the old red championships.
In the case of Theory & Waller, their new championships seemingly take inspiration from the old WWE Tag Team Championship designs, which went through multiple slight variations from the 1980s all the way to 2010, when the titles were replaced with the bronze coin “Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships”.
This is yet another example of the “New Era” coming into play, with Triple H and co implementing changes to ensure a new feeling and aura around the company. The Street Profits would win a number one contenders match on SmackDown to become the first challengers for these new titles.
