Bushiroad Founder Confirms NJPW Is Considering Running Empty Arena Shows In The Near Future

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused major disruption to New Japan Pro-Wrestling's 2020 schedule. The promotion hasn't held an event since February 26 and has cancelled the New Japan Cup, Best Of The Super Juniors 27, and Wrestle Dynasty at Madison Square Garden.

When New Japan returns remains to be seen, but the promotion can run shows again from June 19 after the Japanese government lifted the state of emergency in the country. Fans will even be allowed to attend sporting events from July 10, which would allow 1,000 people to attend shows at Korakuen Hall.

Bushiroad founder Takaaki Kidani recently sat down for an interview with Justin Barrasso at Sports Illustrated and confirmed NJPW is considering running empty arena shows in the near future, but he thinks it is unlikely the promotion will allow spectators to attend events anytime soon. 

Kidani said: "When it comes to decisions that have to be made regarding empty arena matches or bringing fans back to buildings, it's absolutely New Japan Pro-Wrestling's responsibility to assume a position of leadership. I think that events with fans in attendance in the near future is challenging, [but] New Japan Pro-Wrestling is considering empty arena matches at present."
