AEW Plans For American Championship Revealed

Plans for AEW American Championship revealed

MJF has been feeling very patriotic as of late, with the new AEW International Champion rebranding the belt into the red white and blue adorned American Championship instead.

Ironically MJF is taking the title, well, international, with planned defences set for events in Mexico and the UK with CMLL and RevPro respectively. A report from Fightful Select has shed more light on AEW’s plans for the championship and MJF’s run with the belt, with it long having been planned for MJF and former champion Will Ospreay to feud over the Summer.

Ospreay put over AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland at Forbidden Door III in June, with it revealed that this was due to Ospreay wanting to remove the question of an Ospreay/Swerve clash at All In, whilst Ospreay’s creative had been planned out ‘for months’ with a feud with MJF on the cards.

Fightful’s report states that it unclear if the one-hour long title match was always planned between the two heading into a big PPV clash, but even before MJF made his return earlier in 2024 there were calls to have MJF vs. Ospreay take place at All In Wembley on August 25.

As for the American Championship itself, the rebrand is believed to be a temporary one to garner more heat for MJF ahead of All In, and that AEW’s plans for the title are to continue to ‘elevate’ it.
