CM Punk Vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi Announced For AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door

The Best will meet The Ace

AEW World champion CM Punk will face New Japan "Ace" Hiroshi Tanahashi at AEW and New Japan's Forbidden Door, as announced during Wednesday night's Dynamite in Los Angeles.

After Punk teamed with FTR in a victory over Max Caster and Gunn Club, the victors cut a post-match promo that concluded with Punk mentioning Forbidden Door, asking to know who he would be facing at the event. Seconds later, Tanahashi made an entrance, which confirmed the match.

One of the most decorated stars in New Japan's long history, Tanahashi is an eight-time former IWGP Heavyweight champion, two-time Intercontinental champion, three-time United States champion, three-time IWGP Tag Team champion, and has won the G1 Climax on three occasions.

As it stands, Punk will enter the match as the reigning AEW World Heavyweight champion, after defeating "Hangman" Adam Page for the title at Double or Nothing on Sunday in Las Vegas. No indication has been given if it'll be a title match or not.

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door takes place on Sunday, June 26, at the United Center in Chicago.
