Cody Rhodes with the Winged Eagle WWE Title

Following two years of campaigning, Cody Rhodes finally got his wish as he wore the Winged Eagle version of the WWE Championship to the ring for one night only at Saturday Night’s Main Event as the ‘American Nightmare’ defended the Undisputed WWE Title against Kevin Owens.

Cody ended the show with the Winged Eagle too as he defeated Owens to remain Undisputed WWE Champion. Rhodes picked up the win in controversial fashion in a match that saw two ref bumps. With both officials down, though, Cody hit Owens with a Cross Rhodes on a steel chair before Charles Robinson recovered and counted the pinfall win for Rhodes.

Cody has been Undisputed WWE Champion for 252 days since he defeated Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 40.

The Winged Eagle version of the WWE Championship was introduced by Hulk Hogan in 1988. That version of WWE’s top title was used until 1998, being held by the likes of The Ultimate Warrior, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Sycho Sid, and Randy Savage. The Winged Eagle was retired on the Raw after WrestleMania 14, with Stone Cold Steve Austin unveiling the Big Eagle as its replacement.
