Genichiro Tenryu To Undergo Surgery For Spinal Stenosis

Genichiro Tenryu will undergo surgery for spinal stenosis later this week

Japanese professional wrestling legend Genichiro Tenryu is set to undergo surgery this week.

The 72 year-old was hospitalised earlier this month due to a spinal cord injury. Reports noted that he was feeling unwell and using a wheelchair, but that he was not in any imminent danger.

An update from the Tenryu Project promotion clarified that his official diagnosis is spinal stenosis associated with dislocation of the vertebrae. His rehabilitation could be anywhere from two to six months.

The former Triple Crown and IWGP Champion retired in 2015. However, years of punishment from his long in-ring career have lead to his current situation.

The update added that Tenryu was given permission from his doctor to participate virtually in a talk show with Stan Hansen on September 25, depending on his post-operation progress.

One of the biggest stars in Japanese wrestling history, Tenryu previously ran the Super World of Sports and Wrestle Association R promotions during the 1990's. He founded the Tenryu Project in 2010.

Outside of Japan, Tenryu is noted for his appearances at WrestleMania VII and in the 1993 & 94 Royal Rumbles.
