Gunther Addresses Potentially Vacating The WWE Intercontinental Title If He Becomes World Champion

Could Gunther manage both belts?

Would current WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther vacate the title if he were to win the World Heavyweight Championship?

This was the question posed to Der Ring General by Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp a day before the Royal Rumble, where Gunther was set to be one of 30 men competing for a world title match at WrestleMania XL.

In response, the 36-year-old said:

"There is a point to the challenge (of defending both). I haven't really thought about it. It's a decision that has to be made. I have to start thinking. It's a sensible topic. On one hand, the challenge is very interesting. On the other hand, I don't know if it does the title justice if it's a side project. We will see".

The Austrian-born star did not end up triumphing in the men's Royal Rumble match. Entering at number 18, he eliminated Kofi Kingston, The Miz and Jey Uso, before being eliminated by Cody Rhodes (for a third-place finish).

All told, Gunther was in the match for 30z

The longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history will have to find another route to a world title match, having confronted current World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins on last Monday's edition of Raw.

The Ultimate Warrior remains the only man to have simultaneously held the WWE and Intercontinental titles (though he quickly vacated the Intercontinental Title).

Gunther has previously let known his own low opinion of The Ultimate Warrior.
