Gunther’s run as WWE Intercontinental Champion has given the historic belt a much-needed layer of prestige, with Gunther’s reign as champion restoring the title to heights it has not reached for many years.

It’s not just the quality of the in-ring work Gunther has done that has built the IC Title, as ‘Der Ring general’ has shattered many records during his run, notably overpassing Honky Tonk Man’s 454-day reign with the belt in the 1980s to stand as the longest single reigning champion.

That was nearly 150 days ago, though, as Gunther recently hit another milestone as he passed the 600-day mark as champion. Gunther now sits second on the all-time Intercontinental Champions just in terms of days served with the title, with Pedro Morales record surely Gunther’s next goal. He won’t have to wait long, though, if he is to break it, with Morales’ two reigns clocking in at 619 days (617 as recognised by WWE).

Should Gunther break Morales’ record then it remains to be seen if he’ll drop the belt and make a beeline for either of WWE’s world championships, or if he’ll try and break his own personal record as he previously enjoyed an 870 day reign as WWE NXT United Kingdom Champion.
