Janel Grant’s name was thrust into the spotlight after alleging in a lawsuit that she was sexually assaulted and trafficked by Vince McMahon during her time in WWE. At a briefing for the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence, Grant made her first public appearance and spoke on her experience in a 16-minute speech.
Grant noted that it was a series of miracles that she’s even alive today due to her past considering suicide, and spoke on the difficulties of her day-to-dat life in recent times, explaining that she’d only left the house about ten times in the last year.
"I got a call that I didn’t expect on the day of a very big meeting of a new job I had, and it was in front of my new bosses, and it was in front of a high-rise full of residents whose homes I was entrusted to protect. So imagine me getting a phone call I didn’t expect, saying that at any minute the Wall Street Journal would be publishing a story about me, Vince McMahon, and a non-disclosure agreement. I was told, if anybody asks me about this, I can’t make a comment, I can’t acknowledge it, I can’t say I’m not okay, and If anybody approaches me, I can’t acknowledge years of life to people who saw me live it. And it was like somebody set fire to my home intentionally with me still inside of it. So I blacked out and I ended up in a closet with a belt and a stool placed under a little rod. And thank God somebody saw me and stopped it."
She discussed NDA’s, how they’re used, and spoke on Vince McMahon by name on how he utilised their NDA to exercise coercive control.
“This NDA was a tool that Vince could use to justify anything while I remained in a system of exploitation and actually in a position for anyone to exploit me.”
Grant addressed several topics, noting that WWE contacted her to make a statement about McMahon to state that their relationship was consensual, but after refusing, the company proceeded to note that it was consensual anyway. Grant also revealed she was happy to talk to WWE during their investigation, but was not approached. She also revealed federal officers had approached her and she took part in their investigation.
Grant discussed feeling public humiliation due to the love letter revealed in the New York Post, revealed that she felt intimidation in a manner of ways, and referenced an ongoing storyline across WWE programming that she felt was a mockery of her ongoing case. Grant implored WWE & TKO to make things right and recognise the history of the company.
