Major Update On WWE WrestleMania 40 Main Event Plans

What will main event WrestleMania 40?

WWE's plans for the main event of WrestleMania 40 have come into focus.

Cody Rhodes has long been anticipated as the challenger for Roman Reigns' Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 40 ever since The American Nightmare failed to defeat Reigns for the title at WrestleMania 39.

Questions arose around a possible rematch, though, after The Rock made his surprise return to WWE on the September 15 edition of SmackDown, with the former WWE Champion revealing earlier that day a match with Reigns was "locked in" for WrestleMania 39 before it fell through.

The Rock's first match since a six-second win over Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32 might not be on the horizon, though. According to Sports Illustrated, multiple sources close to WWE have indicated there are currently no plans for The Rock vs. Roman Reigns to take place at WrestleMania 40. The decision also won't be made by The Rock, nor is it a certainty Dwayne Johnson would accept due to his obligations outside of pro wrestling.

Instead, Sports Illustrated has reported that unless there is a drastic change in the coming months, Cody Rhodes will be headlining WrestleMania 40.

The 2024 edition of the Showcase of the Immortals is scheduled for April 6 and April 7 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
