Following Wrestle Kingdom and Wrestle Dynasty from the Tokyo Dome, New Japan Pro-Wrestling headed to the Ota-City General Gymnasium for 2025's New Year Dash!! on Monday, January 6.

The show was more muted than in past years, with no surprises, but plenty of matches were set up for future shows.

The main event of New Year Dash served as a preview for future title matches as Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, Rocky Romero, and YOH of Chaos faced off with TMDK's Zack Sabre Jr, Ryohei Oiwa, Robbie Eagles, and Kosei Fujita. Goto won a New Japan Ranbo at Wrestle Kingdom for a future shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, with it being announced following New Year Dash that it will be Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Hirooki Goto at the New Beginning in Osaka on February 11. An IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Title match of Rocky Romero and YOH vs. Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita was also sealed with a kiss following Wrestle Kingdom.

Following 20 minutes, it was Chaos who emerged victorious after YOH caught Robbie Eagles in a sudden pin for the win. The action didn't stop there, though, as Ryohei Oiwa and YOSHI-HASHI chopped each other into oblivion during a pull-apart brawl, chopping each other all the way to the back.

Following his match-of-the-year contender against Kenny Omega at Wrestle Dynasty, Gabe Kidd looks set to challenge for the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship as he stalked champion Yota Tsuji for much of the Los Ingobernables de Japon vs. Bullet Club War Dogs eight-man tag team match. Drilla Moloney also challenged Shingo Takagi to a future match, declaring that dragons aren't real.

Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi picked up a tag team win over Funky Sauce's Alex Zayne and Ryusuke Taguchi. Following the match, Naito and Hiromu challenged The Young Bucks to a future IWGP Tag Team Title match. Matthew and Nicholas Jackson won the vacant belts at Wrestle Dynasty in a three-way also featuring Naito, Takahashi and United Empire's Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan.

Other title matches set up in multi-man matches at New Year Dash were El Phantasmo defending the NJPW World Television Championship against former champion Jeff Cobb, and House of Torture vs. champions Hiroshi Tanahashi, Boltin Oleg, and Toru Yano for the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Titles after House of Torture stole Yano and Tanahashi's title belts.

Another match set up at the show was Shota Umino vs. Great-O-Khan after O-Khan attacked the Wrestle Kingdom 19 main eventer following their multi-man match. O-Khan then ripped up cardboard cut-outs of the IWGP World Heavyweight Title that Umino had received from fans. Umino tried to fight back but he was only beaten down by United Empire.
