NJPW headed to Ontario, California last night for the 2025 Resurgence show, held at the Toyota Arena on May 9.
NJPW’s latest visit stateside was a notable show for plenty of reasons, the most prominent of which coming in the main event as Mercedes Moné put her NJPW Strong Women’s Title on the line against both AZM and Mina Shirakawa. The match began with all three women locking up, before Shirakawa & AZM teamed up to dump Moné out of the ring. After some quick sequences, Moné was back in the ring to hit the Three Amigos. AZM would soon gain control, using La Mistica to try and submit both her opponents, before stomping them both to the mat. After a lot of multi-woman offense and moves, it was Shirakawa’s turn to lock in a double submission, trying to beat both with a figure-four leg lock. Moné was later kicked from the apron, giving AZM the chance to roll Shirakawa up for the win, becoming the brand new NJPW Strong Women’s Championship.
The first main event of the evening came in the form of Hirooki Goto vs. Zack Sabre Jr. for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, in a rematch from New Beginning. There was plenty of technical offense traded, big strikes, disrespectful mind games, and submission attempts. The pair went back and forth throughout with some stiff elbows and forearms, finisher attempts, and more, but the match ended with a double pinfall, with the referee counting both sets of shoulders down for a draw.
In other noteworthy moments, brand new NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Champions were crowned as Templario & TJP of United Empire won the gold from The World Class Wrecking Crew. The pre-show also saw a big surprise appearance as Bea Priestley unexpectedly arrived to wrestle Viva Van, marking her first match since being released by WWE.
