NJPW Reveals New Belts Ahead Of Wrestle Kingdom 18

New IWGP belts before NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18

New Japan Pro-Wrestling revealed two new championship belts before Wrestle Kingdom 18, the promotion's biggest show of the year on January 4 inside the Tokyo Dome.

The inaugural IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion will be crowned in one of the headline matches at Wrestle Kingdom when Will Ospreay takes on Jon Moxley and David Finlay in a Three-Way. The Global Heavyweight Title is replacing the IWGP United States/United Kingdom Heavyweight Title and the new title belt was revealed at today's pre-Wrestle Kingdom press conference.

As can be seen above, the new belt is seemingly inspired by the old IWGP Intercontinental Championship with its white strap and gold plating. The new championship looks set to be utilised in a similar position to the old Intercontinental Title as the main singles belt outside of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

New IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship belts were also revealed at the pre-Wrestle Kingdom 18 press conference by champions Clark Connors and Drilla Moloney of Bullet Club War Dogs. The new title belts maintain the silver plating but they now have a white strap, replacing the old black leather.

Connors and Moloney are scheduled to defend the belts against Francesco Akira and TJP at Wrestle Kingdom. TJP missed today's press conference, though, and Francesco Akira teased 'Aswang' was coming to Wrestle Kingdom.

Other matches booked for Wrestle Kingdom 18 include SANADA vs. Tetsuya Naito fo the IWGP World Heavyweight Title, Bryan Danielson vs. Kazuchika Okada, and Hiromu Takahashi vs. El Desperado for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
