Over a year on from his WWE release in July of 2021, Bray Wyatt was back with the company, appearing at the end of Saturday's Extreme Rules pay-per-view after weeks of White Rabbit teases on WWE TV and WWE.com.

Wyatt's return was eagerly anticipated ahead of October 8 and after the former WWE Champion stepped through the white light and blew out his lantern, he received one of the biggest pops in modern-WWE history.

The return was "very well received" within WWE, according to Fightful Select, and those within the promotion are said to be very happy with the buzz generated in the weeks before Extreme Rules.

Wyatt's return has been brewing since the regime change in WWE that saw Vince McMahon resign in July. McMahon's issues with Wyatt have been well documented but the new regime were optimistic just a week after the former WWE CEO's resignation that Wyatt would come back. In September, a WWE source of Fightful's was "completely convinced" that The Eater of Worlds was WWE-bound.

Past reports have noted that WWE creative was largely hands-off with the White Rabbit teases and the new Director of Longterm Creative Rob Fee was heavily involved. Fee and Wyatt reportedly have a very good relationship and Fee even pitched a Fiend movie prior to Wyatt's release.
