Report: Backstage News On GUNTHER's WWE WrestleMania 39 Plans

More on GUNTHER's WrestleMania 39 plans

GUNTHER is set to wrestle at his first WrestleMania later this year when he defends the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 39 on either April 1 or April 2 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Who GUNTHER will defend the workhorse title against has yet to be revealed. A Fatal Five-Way was held on the March 10 edition of Friday Night SmackDown but the match ended with Drew McIntyre and Sheamus scoring simultaneous pinfalls to set up a number-one contender's singles match on this week's episode from the blue brand. Rumours have tipped GUNTHER to defend the belt against both McIntyre and Sheamus.

An Intercontinental Title clash wasn't always the original plan, though. GUNTHER was at one point in the autumn scheduled to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39 but that match had been scrapped by December 2022. WWE then went through a carousel of opponents for Lesnar before finally landing on Omos.

GUNTHER's plans for the Show of Shows were slightly less chaotic and Fightful Select have reported that Der Ring General's match at 'Mania has been "solidly in place since about December", sometime after a potential clash with Lesnar was scrapped.

GUNTHER has been Intercontinental Champion since June 2022, winning the gold only a couple of months after he moved to the main roster full-time following WrestleMania 38.
