Report: Edge Pitched To Win The WWE Men's Royal Rumble
The man himself came up with the idea
Feb 3, 2021
On Sunday, Edge became the third man in WWE history to win the Royal Rumble from #1. The Rated-R Superstar outlasted the likes of Seth Rollins, Shinsuke Nakamura, Daniel Bryan and Braun Strowman and he will face either Roman Reigns or Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 37.
Reports going back to summer 2020 noted Edge was scheduled to resume his rivalry with Randy Orton at WrestleMania 37 in an I Quit Match but those plans were, obviously, scrapped and the former tag team partners had their blow-off match on this week's Raw.
When discussing the main event of Raw on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that Edge was the one who came up with the idea of him winning the Royal Rumble.
Meltzer said: "They were going to do an I Quit Match at WrestleMania and Edge in fact got this idea of coming back and winning the Royal Rumble and maybe winning the championship. And so they had to get out of the Randy Orton thing and that's how they got out of it."
