Report: The Young Bucks Wanted To Drop AEW Tag Titles To The Outrunners In Squash Match
The Young Bucks wanted a squash AEW World Tag Title loss against The Outrunner
Dec 31, 2024
The latest, 192-day AEW World Tag Team Title reign of The Young Bucks came to an end at Fright Night Dynamite (on October 30) when they lost to Private Party.
Prior to Quen and Zay winning the belts, however, there were different discussions about who Matthew and Nicholas Jackson could drop them to.
During a recent appearance on the Tunnel Talk podcast, Nicholas elaborated on the team's creative plans changing several times, saying:
"For instance, this last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months and months before we actually dropped them. Creative changed, I would say, four to five different times in the last, like six months. At one point we were going to lose the belts to a certain team, and then a month later, it changed to another team. I remember Private Party came up to us, actually, and they were, they mentioned about wanting to do a long-term program with us, and we're like, 'Well, sorry, man, Tony just gave us the layout of what we're doing, and that's not in the cards'. Something changed.
"We ended up wrestling them in a match in Seattle. We tore the house down, and as soon as we got backstage, we knew, alright, it's in Tony's eyes. He was like 'I think we have something', and Matt and I thought the same exact thing, and we're like, we gotta pivot, we gotta change our plans again. That was the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped, and we were happy, though, because we wanted to put those guys over, they deserved the spotlight, and it's been five years now, so they were ready for a big bush. I'm just glad Matt and I got to give them that last shove before we left".
According to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, The Young Bucks at one point wanted to lose the titles to The Outrunners in a squash match.
Chris Jericho certainly doesn't see a problem with Turbo Floyd and Truth Magnum winning the titles, recently telling Gabby AF:
"I knew The Outrunners would get over. I had them on my cruise last year. They could be tag team champions tomorrow, and people would buy it and want to see it".
A previous report noted that people within AEW had pushed for The Outrunners - who are two of the company's top merch sellers - to win the titles.
