Report: WWE Looking To Turn Cody Rhodes Into Daniel Bryan
Cody Rhodes into Daniel Bryan?
Feb 6, 2024
Could the "Whoah" Movement be on the way?
Cody Rhodes was effectively replaced by The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania 40 as the American Nightmare stepped aside for Dwayne Johnson on last week's SmackDown to end the show with a staredown between Rock and Roman Reigns. This is despite Cody Rhodes' Royal Rumble win and him even joking about people mocking him for potentially not finishing the story at WrestleMania 40.
Fans immediately revolted at the change of plans, with #WeWantCody trending on social media and The Rock and Reigns staredown becoming the most disliked WWE YouTube video ever. The situation has since been turned into a work, though, and WWE are reportedly looking to turn Cody Rhodes into the Daniel Bryan of 2014, according to Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer.
"I don't know what they were expecting but they were expecting Cody Rhodes to turn into Daniel Bryan, yes. They were expecting to make Cody Rhodes into a martyr and make him a bigger babyface out of that. Were they expecting people to boo Dwayne? I don't know because I've asked that one and haven't got a straight answer," Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer then questioned if WWE even care about fans rejecting The Rock vs. Roman Reigns.
"I don't know how much they do care because they're going to be getting more eyeballs for this match than any match they've ever had, they're going to have more sponsorship revenue based on the fact Dwayne's wrestling than any match they've had so they may go in there and just go, 'Let 'em boo!' It's the biggest money match that we can ever make and that's the match that we're going to make," Meltzer added.
As of the time of writing, The Rock vs. Roman Reigns is still planned for WrestleMania. More will be revealed at Thursday's WrestleMania 40 press conference.
