WWE Turning Groundswell Of Support For Cody Rhodes Into An Angle

WWE expected the groundswell of support for Cody Rhodes

A groundswell of support has risen around Cody Rhodes in recent days since he was replaced by The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania 40, with Dwayne Johnson now set to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on April 6 or April 7.

The booking change reportedly came about following lobbying behind the scenes from The Rock and the Hollywood star is believed to have been pushing to defeat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.

Since Cody effectively gave up facing Reigns at WrestleMania 40 on SmackDown, support for the American Nightmare has trended on social media, particularly X (FKA Twitter) through #WeWantCody. WWE talents have been tweeting in support of Cody, including Ricochet and Logan Paul.

WWE talents getting involved is seemingly just part of a storyline, though, as Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio the situation is being turned into an angle and WWE are encouraging the groundswell of support for Rhodes. WWE even expected fans to get behind Cody after switching the Mania main event.

"They are turning it into an angle. They are encouraging this and the fact of the reaction for Cody about Cody getting screwed and people getting behind him that was part of the story. That was absolutely expected. As far as people booing Dwayne, I don't know if that was expected, I don't know that it wasn't," said Meltzer.

If WWE will change their booking plans remains to be seen. The company are reportedly monitoring the response to the booking of The Rock vs. Roman Reigns.
