Shane McMahon’s meeting with All Elite Wrestling owner Tony Khan in 2024 set the internet alight, but it seems that McMahon will not be coming to AEW any time soon.
Many online speculated that McMahon could be coming into the company as an on-screen character after being spotted with The Young Bucks, and after meeting with Tony Khan, however nothing so far has come from the meeting.
On a recent episode of the Coach & Bro Show, former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman alleged that McMahon asked Khan for equity in the company and even suggested he come in to run AEW, with Khan ‘ghosting’ McMahon afterwards.
A follow-up report from Fightful Select cannot confirm the suggestion that McMahon wanted equity in AEW, but sources close to McMahon seemingly confirmed that Shane wanted to ‘run things’ in AEW, but lacked the product knowledge or familiarity with AEW as an entity or their business model. Whilst McMahon’s knowledge of AEW may have been lacking, he believes his years behind the scenes up close with WWE were invaluable as well as seeing and hearing first-hand what fans and industry veterans alike wanted when Vince McMahon’s run at the top of WWE became stale.
The source further suggested that Khan apparently thought McMahon was joking after his pitch, but McMahon didn’t take it personally when Khan did not follow up on their initial meeting. Whilst a cameo appearance in AEW may not be out of the question, at this stage it seems unlikely that the two sides could work together.
For AEW’s part, insiders stated that Khan has been quiet on his meeting with McMahon outside of noting they had met but aren’t going to be working together. There was also allegedly never any expanded plan for McMahon to become a regular character on AEW TV.
