Rey Mysterio: Dominik Will Have To Earn The Mysterio Mask

"He’s on his way, eventually one day, maybe the mask will be on."

Rey Mysterio has revealed the initial plan was for Dominik to wear a mask, like his dad, when wrestling, but says his son will now need to earn that honour with his in-ring work.

The Mysterio father and son duo claimed the SmackDown Tag Team Championships from Bobby Roode and Dolph Ziggler at WWE WrestleMania Backlash, having started to regularly team together since switching to the blue brand last year.

Dominik's involvement in WWE began during his father's feud with Seth Rollins, leading to the younger Mysterio facing Rollins in his debut match at SummerSlam 2020. The nature of the booking, according to Rey, meant that there was no time to incorporate a mask for Dominik.

The older Mysterio now believes Dominik will need to earn the mask.

Speaking to the After The Bell Podcast, Rey said: "That was the idea from day one when he started training. I said Dom will continue with this legacy and carry it on. We never really had the opportunity to sit down and discuss our plans which now, in retrospect, we can look at it and say it’s still not late to make things happen like we had it planned out.

"I think Dom is going to have to earn the mask now. He’s on his way, eventually one day, maybe the mask will be on.”
