Sammy Guevara Opposed His Original AEW Return Plans

Sammy Guevara was not keen on his original AEW return plans

Sammy Guevara recently made his return to All Elite Wrestling, with the ‘Spanish God’ making an unannounced appearance on the July 28 Ring of Honor TV tapings after several months out of action, saving Dustin Rhodes from a Dark Order beatdown.

Reports after Guevara’s return stated that Guevara joining ROH was due to Guevara not feeling an aspect of his proposed creative, with it believed a heel turn on AEW TV was pitched to the former TNT Champion. A follow-up report from Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live has shed more light on the situation:

“Yesterday I said he did not want to turn heel and that is not entirely correct. What happened was the idea they had for him on the main roster involved him being heel but he would have been fine being heel. He just didn’t want to do the idea they had for him, which presumably would have been Jericho and the Learning Tree…They probably did want him in the Learning Tree, he didn’t want to be in the Learning Tree.

“Whatever the deal was he was willing to go heel but the ideas they had for him on the main roster, he was not super excited to do those ideas which is why he is now in Ring of Honor and a babyface. This happens all the time. This is not something specific to Sammy. He didn’t like an idea, every day there are things where people aren’t cool with a specific idea and they don’t end up doing it. So this is par for the course for AEW,” said Alvarez.

Guevara has been closely associated with Chris Jericho on AEW TV for several years, with Guevara part of Jericho’s Inner Circle and Jericho Appreciation Society stables. They also teamed together until Guevara was suspended in February 2024.
