Shawn Spears Wins WWE NXT North American Title

Shawn Spears is a champion for the first time ever in WWE, having defeated Tony D'Angelo for the NXT North American Title on March 4.

D'Angelo and Spears faced off in the main event of WWE NXT in a match which saw Spears work over Tony D's back for much of the encounter. This ultimately paid dividends for the challenger as D'Angelo tried and failed to connect with his finisher due to his back giving out and Spears took advantage, hooking D'Angelo's legs for the pinfall win.

Spears was asked about his fortuitous win in a WWE digital exclusive. He said:

"Really? You couldn't let me have it, could you? Here I stand, the new North American Champion, and you can't just give it to me. A year to the day since I returned, and you can't just say, 'Congratulations, you earned it.' Exactly like everybody else over the course of 23 years, you can't just give it to me, can you? Whether you like it or not, this happened. I am your new North American Champion. Love it. Learn to enjoy it. But a man is only as strong as the people behind him, and there is nothing more important on this planet than family. This symbolises many things. It symbolises that I'm a top star here in NXT. It means that I have ascended the ladder. What this also means is that everything I've been talking about, to Izzi Dame, to Niko Vance, to Brooks Jensen, is validated. It's validated by this championship. It's validated by me. Together, this is only the beginning."

March 4 was the first time Spears has won a singles title in WWE across three runs with the company. Spears also never won a title during his four-year stint in All Elite Wrestling.

Spears returned to WWE in 2024. In addition to his on-screen role, he works behind the scenes in NXT.
