FTR’s AAA Tag Title loss in 2022 was controversial, and All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan has revealed he felt double crossed by the lucha promotion over FTR’s loss.

The team of Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood held the titles for over 430 days as part of a dominant title laden 2022, dropping the titles to Dragon Lee and Dralistico only for the belts to be instantly vacated due to Dragon Lee signing with WWE.

Earlier in 2025, WWE announced they were purchasing AAA, and Khan noted during an appearance on Q101 that he had some ‘expectance’ that WWE would be interested in purchasing AAA ever since the aforementioned tag title switch, saying that he did not agree to what went down in the ring:

“We had agreed FTR would go down and wrestle Rush and Dralistico. Then, something happened during the day when Dragon Lee was in there,” Khan said, with the AEW President in Denver the same night to oversee AEW Dynamite.

FTR had noted that ‘some strange stuff was going on’ with WWE cameras having been spotted in Mexico ahead of the match. The bout itself went down after Dynamite had finished in Denver, with Dragon Lee getting the decisive pin with his WWE signing announced afterward:

“FTR’s name is still on the (title belt) plate (at the time), so it was really a double-cross and one of those things that would never happen now,” Khan continued.

AEW worked with AAA from 2019 for several years, with their relationship deteriorating as AEW’s relationship with AAA’s fierce rivals CMLL blossomed.
