AJ Styles was in action on the latest Friday Night SmackDown as he went one-on-one with Carmelo Hayes. Styles had a nasty landing following a moonsault, however, and his leg later buckled following a backbreaker, with the match coming to an end by referee stoppage after Styles was unable to continue.

The exact nature of the former WWE Champion's injury is currently unknown. Reports initially noted that Styles' injury was a work but it was then reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer that Styles was dealing with a legitimate issue.

In an update, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful has revealed that he was told by a WWE source: "The flip where he sold the knee was to be a work. The move where he landed on the knee was legit."

Fightful Select also noted that Styles' friends, as well as WWE staff and writers, have been told that AJ's injury is legitimate.

Regardless of if the injury is real or a work, how long Styles will be off WWE TV is unknown. The 47-year-old only recently returned to Friday Night SmackDown after being off TV for much of the Summer.
