After WWE spoiled the result of the match on Monday Night RAW earlier this week before the title bout even took place, fans were in full expectation for El Hijo del Vikingo to walk out as the winner in his AAA Mega Championship match with Alberto el Patron at last night’s AAA event in Mexico City - and that is exactly what happened.
In what is the first title change for AAA’s top prize ever since WWE’s acquisition of the company, Vikingo defeated Alberto el Patron to be crowned with the gold for the second time in his career. This came after a sea of interference and shenanigans, which saw Alberto el Patron hit a low blow on Vikingo, and send him crashing through a table. Vikingo’s father, King Vikingo, entered the fray, and smashed Patron with a guitar. His son rallied, hitting a 630 splash to get the job done and win the gold.
Vikingo’s win comes after reports of him being slated to be the brand new face of the WWE-AAA project. WWE announced in recent weeks that at the upcoming Worlds Collide event on June 7, Vikingo would be taking on a man who has had an unhealthy obsession with lucha libre style wrestlers, Chad Gable. WWE announced ahead of time that this would be for the title, though Patron was still champion at the time of the announcement.
