The giant flag of the United States that flew above WWE's headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut was a Vince McMahon pet project to the point that McMahon spent $333,000 on reinforcing the building to ensure the flagpole would not topple over.

That is according to TC of WrestleVotes, who said on WrestleVotes Live:

"The one thing that Vince really, really wanted was the flagpole on top of the building… It was important for him to have a flag and when they moved to this building, he wanted the largest flagpole in the state of Connecticut. The largest, the thickest, the biggest pole you could find…however, and this is what I've heard from the company that built this flag, they said, 'Vince, I'm sorry. We can't do it. The winds here won't be able to sustain a flag of this nature. It's too big. It's a danger. We highly suggest not to do it. Not only that, it'll cost a lot of money.' He said, 'Well, how much?' They said, 'Well, close to a quarter of a million dollars.' Actually, over a quarter, it was $333,000 to reinforce the steel on top of this building in order for this flagpole to be structurally sound enough to fly above the new 707 Washington Boulevard.

"Vince had no problem putting that money down. The company got to work. They did everything they could to secure the flagpole, however I don't know if they ever thought of maybe the flag itself tearing and ripping as we saw it do on Saturday night."

The flag - one of the largest US flags in the United States - was 76 ft wide and 40 ft tall and was raised above WWE HQ in honour of 2023's US Veterans Day.

While the flagpole is still standing, the flag itself was ripped from its pole by a storm at 8:44 pm local time on Saturday, June 6 and caused thousands of residents to lose power after the flag landed on power lines. Around 5,000 customers of Eversource Energy immediately lost power, and 40,000 people lost power in nearby Greenwich, Connecticut on Sunday afternoon after the flag made contact with another power line during retrieval efforts. By Monday morning, the power outages in Greenwich and Stamford had mostly been resolved.
