WWE 'Optimistic' CM Punk Vs. Steve Austin Could Finally Happen

Austin versus Punk is now a real possibility.

Could WWE fans finally get to see a showdown between the Texas Rattlesnake and Straight-Edge Superstar?

According to a new report from Fightful Select, WWE officials are confident they can make the dream match a reality.

One source within the company told Fightful that there had already been many ideas pitched between WWE and Punk. While they were unsure how far along things are with regards to talks, planning or pitches, the ideal scenario would see Punk fly out to meet Austin and go over ideas.

The two former WWE Champions have maintained a friendship over the years, with Austin speaking very highly of Punk's in-ring work.

The WWE Hall of Famer improbably came out of retirement to wrestle Kevin Owens in the main event of night one of WrestleMania 38. It was his first match since retiring 19 years prior.

The 58-year-old reportedly turned down the opportunity to wrestle at WrestleMania 39, but left the door open for a return to the ring under the right circumstances.

Whether a match with Punk falls under that category remains to be seen.
