While WWE NXT initially began life as a game show, akin to a new version of Tough Enough, the yellow colour scheme and name was eventually used for WWE's developmental system in 2012, with the first-ever NXT Champion being crowned in the Summer of that year.

There have been over 30 champions since then as NXT has moved through it's black and gold era, to 2.0, to a mix of the two, and now to the current silver and black era that began on October 1, 2024 following WWE NXT's premiere on The CW.
