Although formed in 2002, TNA Wrestling didn't create their own tag team championships until 2007. The promotion utilised the NWA World Tag Team Titles along with the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Title as part of a deal with the National Wrestling Alliance, but their five-year contract came to an end in May 2007.
Four days on from the NWA-TNA split, TNA created the TNA World Tag Team Championships on May 17, 2007. The belts were given to Team 3D, who were the final holders of the NWA World Tag Team Titles under the NWA/TNA umbrella.
Since then, the TNA World Tag Team Championships have become one of the top prizes in North American tag team wrestling.
