WWE NXT Results - July 20, 2021: Samoa Joe Waits For Karrion Kross, NXT Women's Title Match

Will Joe and Kross meet at NXT TakeOver: 36?

While Karrion Kross's booking on Monday Night Raw left much to be desired, The Herald Of Doomsday remains a monster on the black and gold brand and his feud with Samoa Joe bookended the July 20 edition of NXT. Check out what happened below:

Samoa Joe calls out Karrion Kross

With Karrion Kross having well and truly provoked Samoa Joe to close out last week's edition of NXT, The Samoan Submission Machine marched to the ring to kick off Tuesday's broadcast. Dressed for a fight, Samoa Joe simply said, "Tick tock. Tick tock. Look who's come to smash your clock."

Instead of Kross, though, William Regal headed to the ring and told Joe this isn't what he had in mind when they negotiated their arrangement before he added that Joe can't just call out Superstars. Joe immediately and angrily reminded Regal of their provoked clause but the general manager claimed Kross put his hands on Samoa Joe the referee, not Samoa Joe the WWE official.

Joe fired back that Regal can't control Karrion Kross, mentioning the NXT Champion's trip to Raw in the process, and stated he is there to put Kross under control. Regal responded by ordering Joe to solve his issues with Kross peacefully when The Herald Of Doomsday arrives. Joe couldn't agree to that, but he said out of respect for William Regal that tonight would be the end of his problems with the NXT Champion.

Kushida & Bobby Fish def. Diamond Mine

The first match on the show followed the opening segment and Bobby Fish and Kushida defeated Diamond Mine as the new faction's underwhelming run so far continued.

Both teams fought back and forth in a good 15-minute match but the tide of the contest turned after Kushida targeted Tyler Rust's left arm.

After Bobby Fish Clotheslined Roderick Strong over the top rope, Kushida followed up with a Diving Knee and a PK to Rust's left arm. Rust tried to briefly fight back with a Pump Kick but Kushida dodged it and applied the Hoverboard Lock, resulting in the immediate tap out from the Diamond Mine man.

A clip from earlier in the day of LA Knight arriving with Cameron Grimes was shown following the match. Grimes struggled to carry all of Knight’s bags, which prompted all-around good person Drake Maverick to step in. This led to a staredown between Maverick and Knight and a match between the Million Dollar Champion and Drake was booked for later in the show.

Back from a commercial break, Samoa Joe was shown pacing around backstage as he awaited the arrival of Karrion Kross.

Franky Monet def. Jacy Jayne

The broadcast then headed to the ring for Franky Monet's latest match in NXT, with La Wera Loca accompanied by Jessi Kamea.

Similar to every NXT squash match, Jacy Jayne got in some offence in the opening minute but Monet soon took control. Mandy Rose then entered the Capitol Wrestling Center and lay across the announce table, which allowed Jayne to mount a brief comeback. Monet eventually fought back, though, and put her opponent away with the Glam Slam.

Robert Stone also headed to ringside during the match, but Monet wanted nothing to do with him.

An interview from earlier in the day with The Way was then broadcast. Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory were quickly interrupted by Kyle O'Reilly, who reminded Theory of his comments from last week to set up another match for later in the show. Theory would have to fight O'Reilly alone, as Gargano announced he wouldn't be at ringside.

Before that match, though, Wade Barrett had a sit-down interview with Bronson Reed. The Colossal One admitted he had been deeply affected by losing the NXT North American Championship. He noted he had to move forward, though, and said his decision to fight Adam Cole was very wise because many consider the former NXT Champion to be the best.

Kyle O'Reilly def. Austin Theory

Kyle O’Reilly vs. Austin Theory was next on the show and both men put together a very good 14-minute match.

Theory enjoyed spells on top during the contest, but the former EVOLVE Champion couldn't find an answer once O'Reilly dug deep and found his killer instinct.

O'Reilly snapped after Theory grabbed a set of steel steps and an enraged Kool Kyle cracked his head into place and battered Theory with strikes and kicks before he followed up with his Diving Knee to Theory's ankle and locked in the Heel Hook for the submission victory.

O'Reilly then refused to relinquish the hold despite Theory tapping out, with Kyle seemingly reconnecting with his Undisputed ERA mean streak.

Legado del Fantasma Mariachi Musical Madness

Legado del Fantasma headed to the ring for the next segment but Santos Escobar immediately dismissed the mariachi band, noting he refused to steep to Hit Row's level and embarrass himself.

Escobar then said he planned to elevate the North American Championship when he wins the title which led to a Hit Row interruption. Top Dolla, B-Fab and Ashante "Thee" Adonis threw insults at the Mexican faction before Isaiah "Swerve" Scott recalled his feud with Santos Escobar over the NXT Cruiserweight Championship from 2020. Swerve then promised to make Escobar his "b*tch" which led to a brawl between the two factions.

Escobar looked to have the better of Swerve as he attempted to decimate him with a guitar, but B-Fab grabbed the weapon and handed it to Scott, causing Escobar to scurry from the ring. Joaquin Wilde found himself alone in the ring, though, and Swerve decked him with the guitar to bring the segment to an end.

The Way bickered backstage following the segment and Austin Theory ended up walking out on them after he said they were falling apart and Gargano was too distracted to high five him.

William Regal caught up with Samoa Joe following another break and the general manager told Joe to calm down before Kross arrives at the Capitol Wrestling Center.

Odyssey Jones def. Andre Chase – NXT Breakout Tournament

The NXT Breakout Tournament continued in the next match on the show and Odyssey Jones was presented as a future star during the contest.

The match featured some sloppy moments, though, and Andre Chase landed on his neck on the outside after Odyssey Jones failed to catch him during a dive to the floor. Both men immediately got up fortunately and Chase dominated much of the remaining match until Jones eventually fought back and decimated his opponent with a Modified Boss Man Slam for the victory.

McKenzie Mitchell interviewed MSK next on the show and the NXT Tag Team Champions were about to reveal what MSK stands for but an Imperium vignette about Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner wanting to protect the purity of professional wrestling aired instead.

Pete Dunne and Oney Lorcan then cut a promo about Timothy Thatcher and Tommaso Ciampa. The two teams will square off next week.

Drake Maverick def. LA Knight

LA Knight squared off with Drake Maverick in the fifth match of the night following their earlier confrontation.

Before the bell, LA Knight ordered Cameron Grimes to hold the Million Dollar Title nice and high on the outside but The Technical Savage soon revelled in the chants of "To the Moon."

Knight took exception to the support Grimes was being shown from the fans and he once again ordered his butler to hold the gold up high for all to see. While Knight was doing so, though, Maverick caught him with a Dropkick, sending him crashing into the Million Dollar Title and Maverick rolled up Knight for the win.

Maverick was given no time to celebrate, however, as Knight decked him with a Clothesline and beat down the former 205 Live general manager. Grimes couldn't just stand by and watch and he dragged Knight away from Maverick. Knight turned the tables, though, and he gave The Technical Savage no choice but to punch Spud. A despondent Grimes then glared at Knight to bring the segment to an end.

After another break, Karrion Kross's car was shown pulling up to the Capitol Wrestling Center which prompted Samoa Joe to bull rush the vehicle and drag out the driver. Kross wasn't in the vehicle, though, and the driver revealed the NXT Champion was inside the Capitol Wrestling Center.

Raquel Gonzalez def. Xia Li – NXT Women's Championship

It was then time for the main event match between Raquel Gonzalez and Xia Li.

The Chinese Superstar was without Mei Ying and Boa for some reason and Raquel Gonzalez used her power to dominate the early going. Xia Li eventually managed to fight back and she targeted Gonzalez's left knee as she looked to chop the champion down.

Li dominated the remainder of the match until Gonzalez fought back and connected with a Spinning Vader Bomb that appeared to legitimately injure the challenger as the referee and WWE's medical team immediately checked on Xia.

Li was able to briefly continue so Gonzalez could hit the One Arm Powerbomb to retain the NXT Women's Championship.

Samoa Joe calls out Karrion Kross again

Before Raquel Gonzalez even had the chance to leave the CWC, an infuriated Samoa Joe charged to the ring and demanded to know where his "young champion" was.

Kross appeared on the titantron and declared NXT was his world now. The camera then panned to show an unconscious William Regal as Kross stood over the fallen general manager. The NXT Champion then walked to his car and drove away just before a raging Joe could reach the vehicle.
