AEW Replaces International Title With American Championship

AEW American Championship replaces International Title

An All Elite Wrestling championship has received a makeover, with MJF disposing of the International Championship and unveiling the AEW American Championship on the July 24 edition of AEW Dynamite.

MJF showcased the new title during Dynamite’s opening segment, gloating about his recent win over former champion Will Ospreay after a 59-minute epic on July 17. MJF’s bombast brought out Ospreay, who chastised MJF before revealing that AEW President Tony Khan has green-lit MJF vs. Ospreay II at All In on August 25, with MJF’s championship on the line in Wembley Stadium. Ospreay then retrieved the International Championship from a bin.

Friedman had previously offered a match at All In to Daniel Garcia, but ‘Red Death’ has been absent from AEW TV in recent weeks after being on the hands of a beatdown from MJF.

For all of Ospreay’s indignation for MJF’s conduct, it mirrors Ospreay’s own run with the IWGP United States Championship in NJPW, with Ospreay discarding that title in favour of his own special IWGP United Kingdom Championship.

Updated card; AEW All In, August 25, 2024:

  • Swerve Strickland (c) vs. Bryan Danielson - AEW World Championship
  • Toni Storm (c) vs. Mariah May - AEW Women’s World Championship
  • MJF (c) vs. WIll Ospreay - AEW American Championship
  • Jack Perry (c) vs. Darby Allin - TNT Championship
