The burgeoning relationship between All Elite Wrestling and CMLL hit an important milestone when CMLL’s Atlantis Jr. defeated AEW/ROH star Kyle Fletcher to win the ROH World Television Championship.

The title change on June 28 occurred in CMLL’s home, the legendary Arena Mexico, and was the first time in over a decade that a non-Mexican title changed hands in the venue, with La Sombra’s victory over IWGP Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura in 2013 the last time a non-Mexican belt changed hands on CMLL home soil.

In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has shed some more light on the title change, stating that it was important for the growing relationship between AEW/ROH and CMLL. The current feeling is that the partnership is on very good ground, with Atlantis Jr.’s win booked to give credibility to Atlantis Jr. as beating a foreign star for the title will boost his standing in CMLL.

The two sides formed a working agreement in late 2023, with wrestlers from AEW working CMLL events in Mexico, and CMLL stars working AEW and ROH shows in North America. The alliance has not come without its difficulties, due to AEW having an established working agreement with CMLL’s fierce historic rivals Lucha Libre AAA.

Both AEW and CMLL are partners with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, with AEW, ROH, and CMLL talent scheduled to appear alongside STARDOM talent at the inaugural NJPW Wrestle Dynasty Show in the Tokyo Dome on January 5, 2025.
