Canadian independent wrestling promotion Destiny Wrestling have defended booking Marty Scurll for their Icons IV event on April 6.
It was announced on February 17 that Scurll would return to Destiny Wrestling at the event, an announcement which quickly received a backlash on social media. Destiny Wrestling have since issued the following statement to KingOfTheNorth:
"Destiny is and always takes steps to make sure everyone is safe. And no one should ever feel uncomfortable at our shows. We have spoken to all talent on the show about this booking, to make sure everyone is ok with it. And by all accounts everyone feels the same about the situation. Marty is in a different stage in his life and is about to be married. He has matured and is looking for another chance to do better on the world stage. I can't tell you what to do but I can promise you the show will be entertaining and a great opportunity to see international talent in your area.
"Again I thank you for the email and if there is anything else we can do for you please reach out anytime and thanks again for your amazing support of independent wrestling."
Scurll was accused of sexual assault during the Speaking Out movement in 2020. The alleged incident occurred after an IPW: UK after-show party in January 2015 when Scurll was 26 and the victim was 16.
Scurll addressed the allegations in multiple statements, claiming he and the then-16-year-old had a "brief consensual sexual encounter" and he "did not become aware of her age until after the encounter." The accuser disputed that Scurll didn't know how old she was, however.
Prior to the allegations, Scurll was the joint head booker of Ring of Honor but he went on hiatus from the promotion following the Speaking Out movement. Beyond an unaired appearance at an NJPW STRONG taping in January 2021, Scurll has not wrestled for a major pro wrestling promotion since the sexual assault allegations were made. He has continued to wrestle on the independent wrestling scene in the United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Mexico.
