New Japan legend Kazuchika Okada has filed to trademark the term ‘Rainmaker’.
Okada submitted a filing to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the name of his finishing move on January 12, with Michael E. Dockins is listed as the attorney of record.
The filing states the trademark purposes are for:
“Entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests; Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, live appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, personal appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, televised appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network.”
This trademark filing has added to speculation that Okada could seriously be considering ending his New Japan run, with both WWE and All Elite Wrestling reportedly keeping tabs on Okada should he decide to go after a new challenge.
Okada’s current NJPW deal is reportedly near its end, and whilst Hiroshi Tanahashi taking over as NJPW President in the wake of Takami Ohbari’s exit was seen as a positive for keeping Okada in NJPW, his future is yet to be confirmed.
