The 2025 edition of NJPW Battle In The Valley was held last night as the company took over the San Jose Civic in San Jose, California, following on from a busy week that has seen NJPW host Wrestle Kingdom, Wrestle Dynasty, and New Year’s Dash.
The biggest takeaways from NJPW Battle In The Valley 2025 were actually the set ups to matches down the road at Windy City Riot. Konosuke Takeshita successfully defended the NEVER Openweight Championship against KUSHIDA, and followed this up by issuing a challenge to Hiroshi Tanahashi at Windy City Riot 2025, which will mark Tanahashi’s final ever match in the United States.
Another match was set up for Windy City Riot, as Strong Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd fought Tomohiro Ishii to a 30-minute time limit draw. Kidd challenged Ishii to an Iron Man match at Windy City Riot, which was accepted by Ishii. The pair exchanged slaps following this match announcement until officials separated them.
There was an emotional moment that took place at Battle In The Valley, as Sumie Sakai wrestled in her retirement match. She teamed up with EVIL & SHO to take on Hiromu Takahashi, Matu Iwatani & Yuka Sakazaki. The final stretch saw Sakai battling all three of her opponents at once, but in the end it was too much, and she fell to three finishers - Sakazaki hitting a spinning package, Iwatani a moonsault, and Takahashi a Time Bomb. It took all three to pin her to put her down, and she was greeted with a standing ovation after the bout.
